Mrs. Kelly Fernald

Principal

This is my 19th year working in a Catholic School. I have taught grades 3 through 5, but  spent the majority of my time in grade 5 (16 years +1 helping with Math) and now this is my 2nd year in administration (1 year as Assistant Principal).   I very much enjoyed preparing students for Middle School and helping them with organization and time management. But, it was time to move on and I am delighted to be the Principal of the Saints Academy.  I not only get to work with one grade, but all of our students, teachers, and families. I feel like I have always been a part of a Catholic School community. I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten (SMA Danvers & Bishop Fenwick) through my Bachelor’s degree (St, Bonaventure University), I student taught in a Catholic school, and taught at St. Mel’s, St. John’s, and SA. I think being a Catholic school gives us a great advantage in helping to cultivate responsible, respectful, and trustworthy citizens. We are able to use the Bible and Jesus’ teachings to aid students in becoming confident and caring young adults.

My husband Brandon and I live in Danvers with our son, Logan (SA Middle School student), and our Shih-tzu, Baylor. I grew up in Danvers and attended St. Mary of the Annunciation School. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family: camping, going to the beach, attending Red Sox games, skiing, concerts or plays, and walking.

I am blessed to be a part of this community!

After 27 years of teaching, my educational philosophy has remained the same: education should be student-centered with a strong Catholic foundation. The Pre-Kindergarten classroom environment is conducive to learning and allows students to explore, question, and grow within a structured and safe atmosphere. Students are introduced to Bible stories and participate in first Friday mass with the school community within their first year at Saint’s Academy. Classroom expectations are based on Catholic values, which are reinforced through Bible stories, prayer and daily activities.

I am the mother of six wonderful children, all graduates of the former St. John the Evangelist School, and blessed to be the grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

I believe the greatest gift we can give our children is a strong foundation.  A foundation grounded in strong academics as well as values.  With a strong foundation, a child can grow to be a warm loving person, adding great depth to the community.  Being educated in Catholic schools for 16 years I believe it is there, that one can grow and develop a foundation that will last them a lifetime.

I also gained wonderful experiences through Girl Scouts as well.  I went on adventures across the country.  Searching for gold in active gold mines in Nevada.  It was here I learned about minerals and the industry of mining.  Later I spent a week cold weather camping and dog sledding across northern Minnesota.  I went on to receive my Gold Award in high school and volunteered as a guide to the girls as they reach their gold award.

I live in Gloucester with my husband and three children attending Saints Academy, Ryan in second grade, Sean in third grade and Elizabeth in sixth grade.  I love spending time with the kids exploring in the woods, diving for crabs at the beach on a hot summer day and sledding and skating during the winter.

I am a product of Catholic High School (Our Lady of the Angels Academy, Enfield, CT) and both my children are graduates of Catholic Elementary (St.Ann’s) and High Schools (Bishop Fenwick and St. John’s Prep). My teaching career started in a Ct. prison and from there I moved to a public school resource room working with special needs students in 7th 8th and 9th grade. I have been educating first graders in a Catholic School setting since 1990. I obviously strongly believe in the importance of a Catholic Education. I think that starting the day with prayer and being able to incorporate faith in daily life and learning is important. Family atmosphere, service, structure, faith and up to date curriculum are important components of what makes me proud to be a member of the staff at The Saints Academy.

I reside in Gloucester with my husband Joe and our two dogs, Sam and Jack. Our daughter, her husband, and our grandson reside next door. Our son and his wife live and teach in Kaneohe Hawaii.

Catholic education has been a very important part of my life for the past 38 years. Thirty-four years were spent at St. Ann School in Gloucester teaching third grade, art, and fourth grade.  After St. Ann’s closed, I was very fortunate to find a fourth grade position at St. John the Evangelist School. I now feel blessed to be part of The Saints Academy as a fourth grade teacher! Belonging to a tight knit community that has a strong sense of family and a commitment to academic excellence is very rewarding. It is a privilege teaching so many students that are growing spiritually, academically, and socially right before my eyes!

My husband John and I reside in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. We enjoy spending time with our two sons (Jason and Kevin) and daughter-in-law (Nina). I also enjoy traveling, going to concerts, spending time at the beach, and gardening in my spare time.

I am pleased to have joined the staff at The Saints Academy and continue my mission as a Catholic school educator. I have been a Catholic school teacher since 2003 when I began teaching second grade at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Beverly.  Returning to the Beverly community after teaching fourth grade in an urban school district and first grade in a suburban Catholic school is like coming home.

It is so rewarding to see my students grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally in the warm and caring atmosphere provided by The Saints Academy.  I thoroughly enjoy teaching my students to read and love books. I enjoy seeing the wonder in their eyes as they explore the mysteries of religion and the world around them.  Teaching is a second career for me as I was a physical therapist for 15 years prior to pursuing my master’s in education through Lesley University. My background has helped me to incorporate mindfulness and movement into the classroom.

When I am not teaching I enjoy gardening, cross country skiing, yoga, and kayaking.  Being an avid reader, I belong to a monthly book club. I love to spend time with my two grown children, my husband, two dogs, and extended family.  We enjoy going to the beach, hiking, and watching the Patriots.

I attended Saint Mary’s in Beverly K-2nd grade then my parents decided to send me to public school in Danvers, which is where I continued school until gradating from Danvers High School in 2012. After high school I decided to continue my education at Fairfield University, which is a Jesuit, Catholic University. Here, I took a few religion courses and also learned and talked a lot of about the Jesuit Values in each one of my classes. At Fairfield I earned my degree in Communication and now I am attending Lesley University to earn my Master’s in Elementary Education.

I am very pleased to be home at Saints Academy, teaching your children this year. This will be my twenty-first year in Catholic schools as a teaching assistant, teacher, coach, faculty advisor, assistant principal, and principal. My experiences have been consistently rewarding. I take great pride in Catholic education and the work we do. This year will be a wonderful challenge, starting anew in fifth grade at Saints Academy. I am a bit nervous and very excited to become part of the SA family.

I am a graduate of Catholic schools: Matignon High School in Cambridge and Merrimack College (BA - History). Education became my vocation relatively late in life. I earned my teaching certification in 1997. In 1999, I earned my Master of Elementary Education degree from Salem State University. In 2016, I earned a CAGS (Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies) degree in Educational Leadership from Salem State.

I was born and raised in Somerville, the fifth of six children. Three of us are teachers, another a nurse, and two more were long-time hockey coaches. The values my parents instilled in us were family, service, education, and faith. I believe strongly in all four, and try to model them for my students.

Mrs. Walsh and I have lived in Beverly since 1985, and my son Conor, a graduate of St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Beverly High School, the University of Maryland, and New England School of Law, was born here. I have also been involved in youth sports for many years, working with St. John the Evangelist cross-country, the North Shore Catholic Elementary School Cross-Country League, St. Mary Star of the Sea basketball, and various Somerville and Beverly youth leagues (Somerville and Beverly Youth Hockey, Beverly Youth Soccer, Pop Warner, Kiwanis Basketball, Little League, Babe Ruth, Senior Babe Ruth).

I am a parishioner of the Beverly Collaborative. I am a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and help out the ushers when needed. I have also taught Religious Education.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the business world for nearly twenty years, primarily in the financial and computer software industries. These jobs helped me to discern how I can best serve, and that is by being an educator.

I look forward to the school year and I am thrilled to be home! God bless you!

I am excited to start my new position here at The Saints Academy as a Religion Teacher.  This is my third year of teaching and my third year at The Saints Academy. I am happy to call this place home. I have gone to Catholic School for the majority of my life and I now see as a teacher why Catholic education is so important. It has really shaped me into who I am today. I attended Saint Joseph’s School in Salem and graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in Lynn in 2012. When it was time for me to make my decision as to where I wanted to go to college, I knew in my heart that continuing down a path of Catholic education was the way to go. My faith is very important to me and I believe this is because from day one I had teachers who were so strong in their faith and were so eager to share Gods love with their students.I graduated from Assumption College in 2016. I am currently perusing my masters degree in education at Salem State University.

I am the oldest of seven children. I have two sisters and four brothers, one of which is a member of the 1st graduating class at The Saints Academy.  I also have a dog named Curtis who is a flat – coated retriever mix. I live in Salem with my family.  When I am not teaching or in school I enjoy baking, spending time with family, and learning about history.

I have been a Catholic school teacher for the past twenty two years. As I enter my twenty-third year in elementary education, I realize how fortunate I am to be teaching in an environment where the teachers and staff are permitted to speak of God in our school day. Each and every child has an inestimable worth in His eyes, and I honor that in my daily practice. It is my belief that each and every one of us is placed on this earth to be confident, happy, and productive, and to help one another out. With this in mind, I believe that each child will grow educationally, spiritually, and emotionally. Kindness and caring for one another should be at the heart of what we all do. As future citizens and leaders of our country, our students will be equipped to thrive and make their mark on this world, given such a strong foundation.

My husband Sal and I live in North Beverly. Thirty nine years ago we chose this city since it was a middle ground between our childhood communities, Marblehead and Gloucester. Having attended Our Lady Star of the Sea School from Kindergarten through Grade Eight, I know the charism, mission, and purpose of The Sisters of Notre Dame. Sal and I raised two children in this community, Michael and Laura. Both are currently educated, degreed, and working to make their mark on the world. Sal and I love outdoor activities such as hiking, gardening, and taking care of God’s green earth.

I believe that my philosophy of Catholic education is constantly evolving,  I have always believed that each child is a unique gift from God and a teacher is given the task to inspire, enlighten and guide.  Mistakes are part of learning, and the desire to try is at the very core of each lesson.  Although this philosophy appears to be adequate, my Catholic identity was challenged a few years ago when I accepted a position at a Catholic school in Virginia.  In Virginia,  I met people who openly lived their faith at home, at work, and in the ordinary day to day tasks.  What I learned from them was very simple.  It is so easy to become caught up in the stress of the day - the feeling of being pulled in many different directions all at once. But, when you begin each day by centering your thoughts around the Lord and let Him work through you, inner peace and being at peace follows.  I believe this allows me to be a more effective teacher and each day, I try to inspire every student to center their day around the Lord and ask themselves, how can I serve the Lord.

On a personal note, I grew up in upstate New York where I attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools.  Sadly, these schools no longer exist, but the Christian values instilled by the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Franciscans are carried with me each and every day.  My parents supplied the other half of my values.  They were first generation, blue collar  Americans who firmly believed that hard work and a positive attitude will ensure personal success.  As we enter a new era at Saints Academy,  I hope to  pass along these values to all my students.  I look forward to the excitement of the challenge.

I believe all students are entitled to an enriching education, respect, and professionalism. My goal is to motivate students and enable all students to access curriculum despite their learning differences; my job is to facilitate the learning process and enable students an opportunity to learn and grow both as students and individuals. Some of the methods I utilize are class participation, demonstration, activity based discovery, inquiry and technology, and project based teaching. I believe the classroom climate is set by the teacher’s attitude and should be a safe, inviting, and stimulating environment. Teaching in a Catholic school allows me to impart knowledge to my students while allowing me to address social issues within the confines of living the way God would want us to.

"To teach means not only to impart what we know, but also to reveal who we are by living what we believe." Pope John Paul II, September 1984

I have been married for thirty-four years, and have three wonderful children who made me a better person. All three have graduated from college and making their way in the world. We live in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where my husband and I were married in my childhood church – the same church that my husband’s parents were also married. We enjoy traveling and have traveled extensively through the United States and Ireland where my husband has family in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. When not teaching or taking courses in education, my greatest joy comes from spending time with my family. I enjoy reading and traveling.
