• The Most Wonderful time of the Year!

Posted by Kelly Fernald on 12/21/2018

I can't believe it is already Christmas!  What a wonderful school year so far.  I have enjoyed my first few months as Principal.  I love being able to go into all the different classrooms and spending time with the children.  I am trying to be at the door most mornings to greet our students as they come in and am often in the bus room at the end of the day to see them off as they go home!  I like getting to know each of our students throughout the day and year.  Visiting the PreK, participating in "I have, who has?" with grade 2, watching presentations in all grades, reading with grade 1, are just some of the fun activities I have been lucky enough to be a part of so far!

Looking forward to even more in the New Year!

  • I have the coolest job!

So yesterday the Weather Warrior from NBC 10 came to visit our grades 1-3 classes.  As the 2nd graders were walking out the door, I asked if they were as excited as I was.  One of the boys said, "You're coming too?".  My response was, "I get to come to all the cool stuff!".  And boy is that true!

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved teaching 5th grade!  It is such a fun year! Not quite middle schoolers, not quite little kids, but still a lot of fun!

In this role, I get to hang out with everyone.  Whether it's a field trip with the middle schoolers to Boston to learn about our history or reading and making crafts with the PreK, I have enjoyed the time I spend with all the children.  I get to cover classes when needed too so I have seen all the different things each grade is learning about.  The best part though is just seeing the kids in action every day, talking to them, and getting to know each of them more.  I am so happy to have met so many more families as well.

This is what I thought about when asked, "You're coming too?" and wanted to make sure I shared it with all of you.

We still have a few more weeks left with a lot of things to accomplish.  Looking forward to a strong end to the 2017-2018 school year!

  • April 6

I hope everyone had a Blessed Easter with your family.  It felt a little like spring.

If you have not yet, make sure you check out the 5th grade's presentation of the Stations of the Cross on our Saints Academy Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SaintsBeverly/videos/1681919378554564/.  It was a very moving program.  Miss Afflitto and the 5th graders did a wonderful job sharing this with our younger students.

Can you believe we are already in the fourth quarter?  April vacation is only a week away and only a little under 2 months left after that.  I am amazed at how quickly the year has gone by, but I have really enjoyed my first year as Assistant Principal.

This week, I got to see the 8th graders working on their 2nd grade buddy's First Communion books.  They are looking good.  A lot of creativity and caring is going into them.  My 5th grade math class is learning about exponents and square roots so we watched some fun music videos to help us with these concepts.  I checked in to 2nd grade math where they are carrying and borrowing in addition and subtraction.  I really liked seeing one student helping another when he made a mistake in carrying.  It was thoughtful and helpful and the other student let the teacher know he helped him.  Great teamwork!

I also got to spend some chilly lunch recesses with grades 3-5.  It was nice to go outside, but I so want it to be a little warmer!

I don't know about you, but I am done with the snow!  Tuesday was the First Day of Spring!  So hopefully it is just around the corner and these next few storms avoid us.

Today I got to accompany Mayor Cahill as he visited with our students.  He visited grades 3,4, and 5 just to check in and see what they are learning.  He spent some time with grade 8 discussing government.  He also checked out some of the students in grade 6 and their convection current experiments as well as learn about our seismograph.

This afternoon the 5th grade hosted their Colonial Fair.  They were very enthusiastic about their topics and I learned many new things! (I put some pictures on this Blog page - scroll down)

Tomorrow (weather permitting), the 8th grade will be hosting a Peace assembly.  I know they will do a great job leading our school and helping us all to see that there are many ways we can make our school, our communities, and our world a better place by just the little things we do and say.

  • Checking in on March 5th

Posted by Kelly Fernald on 3/5/2018

I hope everyone had a wonderful February break.  I sure did.  I got to see the Red Sox at Spring Training, my best friend and her children, and my parents.  We spent a lot of time in the sun and on the beach!

When I got back, I got right into getting ready for our Culturama judges.

Thursday the 8th grade shared their hard work with judges from all different areas of study.  If you didn't get a chance to check them out, the nine topics that ribboned are on display near the front office.  All of the judges were very impressed with our students and their presentations!

What a crazy wind storm on Friday.  Hopefully winter is almost over :0

    Back to regular schedule.

  • Hello from the Assistant Principal

Posted by Kelly Fernald on 2/14/2018

Can you believe it is almost time for February break?

This year has flown by.  I have really enjoyed transitioning to my new position as Assistant Principal.

For those of you that don't know, I didn't leave teaching all together.  I still teach a small group Math class for 5th grade.  We're continuing what Mrs. Fears and I started to help them get used to changing classes and have the advantage of a smaller class.  I start every day with my 5th graders and it really starts the day off right!

I also visit Grades 3 and up during their STREAM blocks (not as much lately as I like, but I will after vacation!).  It is awesome to see our students creating, problem solving, and working together!  I will post pictures of some of the great projects I have observed so far this year.

I have also tried to make some time to visit with our littlest students.   I usually just poke my head in and visit for a little bit.  Last week I spent some real time with them and we created Valentine people together. I am looking forward to visiting them again on Dr. Seuss Day (March 2nd).

I have had the pleasure of hanging out with the Kindergarten on more than one occassion as well (library class, the playground) and I hope to be spending some more time as the weather gets better.

I hope everyone has a great and restful break.  I plan to spend mine soaking up some sun and checking in on the Red Sox at Spring Training.
